AWS Lambda Pricing
Lambda bills each request and each GB-second a function runs: its memory setting times how long it ran. In us-east-1, x86 is $16.6667 per million GB-seconds and $0.20 per million requests. Graviton is about 20% cheaper on duration, and the rate steps down once a month's duration passes 6 billion GB-seconds.

Provisioned concurrency
GB-seconds are memory in GB (1 GB = 1,024 MB) times billed duration. The duration tiers count every on-demand function in the account, per region and architecture, and the free tier is shared across the whole account, so one function's estimate lands in the first tier unless you enter the account's total. With provisioned concurrency, invocations are assumed to fill the provisioned environments before any run on demand. The offer is on-demand only: Compute Savings Plans can discount duration and provisioned concurrency, and are not shown. Data transfer, logging and the services a function calls are billed separately.
Duration price tiers
On-demand duration, for US East (N. Virginia)| Architecture | Monthly duration | Per million GB-seconds | Per GB-second |
|---|---|---|---|
| x86 | First 6 billion GB-seconds a month | $16.6667 | $0.0000166667 |
| 6 billion to 15 billion GB-seconds a month | $15.0000 | $0.000015 | |
| Over 15 billion GB-seconds a month | $13.3334 | $0.0000133334 | |
| Arm (Graviton) | First 7.5 billion GB-seconds a month | $13.3334 | $0.0000133334 |
| 7.5 billion to 18.75 billion GB-seconds a month | $12.0001 | $0.0000120001 | |
| Over 18.75 billion GB-seconds a month | $10.6667 | $0.0000106667 |
Each tier's rate applies only to the GB-seconds inside it, so passing a threshold lowers the price of what comes after, not of the whole month. The thresholds count every on-demand function in the account, in one region, on one architecture. Arm's tiers start later, at 7.5 billion GB-seconds against 6 billion on x86. Provisioned concurrency is not tiered.

Managed Instances runs functions on EC2 instances of the type you choose. Fee vs EC2 is the management fee divided by the EC2 Linux on-demand price in the same region; the median is about 15%. Every fee shown is AWS's published rate, not a calculation from EC2. A dash means we have no EC2 price to compare.
Alternatives to Lambda
| Option | Price vs Lambda | Why look at it |
|---|---|---|
| Lambda on Graviton (Arm) | -20%-$0.048/hr 4 GB busy for a full hour, us-east-1 | Lower duration rate, same request rate. Code and dependencies must run on arm64. |
| AWS Fargate (2 vCPU, 4 GB task) | -59%-$0.141/hr 4 GB busy for a full hour vs one task-hour, us-east-1 | Billed for the task while it runs, busy or idle. Suits work that keeps a container occupied. |
| EC2 (c6i.large) | -65%-$0.155/hr 4 GB busy for a full hour vs one 2 vCPU / 4 GiB instance-hour | Lowest hourly price for steady load. You run, patch and scale the instance. |
These compare an hour of solid work. A 4 GB x86 function busy about 41% of the hour costs the same as the Fargate task; below that, Lambda is cheaper because idle time is free. Provisioned concurrency undercuts on-demand once its environments are more than about 60% busy.
What to know about AWS Lambda
Functions billed per request and per GB-second of run time, so an idle function costs nothing and a busy one costs more than the same work on a container.
Lambda charges for two things: each request, and each GB-second the function runs. A GB-second is the memory setting in GB times the billed duration in seconds. In us-east-1 that is $0.20 per million requests and $0.0000166667 per GB-second on x86. A 512 MB function that runs 120 ms, 10 million times a month, costs about $12.
Graviton (Arm) is the easy saving. Its duration rate is about 20% lower and requests cost the same, so most functions get cheaper by roughly a sixth from switching architecture, provided the code and its dependencies build for arm64.
Duration gets cheaper with volume, in tiers. Each tier’s rate covers only the GB-seconds inside it. The first step comes after 6 billion GB-seconds a month on x86, which is about $100,000 of duration in one region. That threshold counts every function in the account.
The free tier is 1 million requests and 400,000 GB-seconds a month, plus 100 GB of response streaming. Every function in the account shares it. The estimator’s default function, 10 million requests at 120 ms and 512 MB, uses all of it on its own. With more than one function in the account, assume it’s spent, which is why the estimator leaves it off.
Provisioned concurrency keeps environments warm. You pay a per-GB-second charge for every second they exist, then a lower duration rate for invocations that run on them. In us-east-1 x86 it beats on-demand only when the environments are busy more than about 60% of the time. Below that, you pay extra for faster start-ups. In AWS GovCloud (US-West) on x86 it never beats on-demand, because the warm charge is larger than the duration saving.
Lambda versus a container comes down to idle time. A 4 GB function that runs a full hour costs more than twice as much as a 2 vCPU, 4 GB Fargate task. The two break even when the function is busy about 41% of the hour. Below that, Lambda is cheaper, because idle time is free.
Managed Instances runs functions on EC2 instances you choose. You pay the EC2 price plus a management fee, which is a median of about 15% of the Linux on-demand price, and requests at the usual rate.
Not every meter is sold everywhere. Lambda@Edge is priced in 22 regions. In us-east-1 its requests cost $0.60 per million, three times the regular rate. The rates table on this page marks what each region lacks.
This page shows on-demand rates only. Compute Savings Plans can discount Lambda duration and provisioned concurrency, and are not in the price list we read.
Good for
- Spiky or low-traffic work that sits idle most of the hour
- Event handlers and glue code that run for milliseconds
- Teams that want no instances or containers to manage
Watch for
- A function busy most of the hour costs more than a Fargate task or an EC2 instance with the same memory
- The free tier is per account, so it rarely covers anything in a shared work account
- Volume discounts start at 6 billion GB-seconds a month, in one region, on one architecture
- Provisioned concurrency only saves money when its environments are busy more than about 60% of the time
- Ephemeral storage above the included 512 MB is billed per GB-second
