AWS Region Cost Comparison

Price the same workload where you run today against the regions you're considering, line by line rather than as one averaged index.

Presets:

  • EU (Ireland)eu-west-1

  • EU (Frankfurt)eu-central-1

The basket is identical in every region, so differences come from AWS's regional rates alone. Cross-region transfer is the extra cost of connecting the candidate to your regions, shown separately. Account-level free tier, Savings Plans/RIs and service availability are out of scope. See the method note below.

Adding a regionHow much more or less the same workload costs in each candidate region
EU (Frankfurt) · eu-central-1+9.4%vs the average of your regions · +$200/mo ($2,131 → $2,331)
  • vs US East (N. Virginia)+13.6%
  • vs EU (Ireland)+5.5%
Plus $82/mo transfer to connect it
Reading the result

Read the lines before the total. The services don't move together, and the line driving the difference is the part worth acting on.

Percentages compare each candidate with the same line in each current region. The last row of each group compares against the average of your current regions, equally weighted.

Connecting the candidate to your regions

AWS bills transfer between regions to the sending region, and inbound is free, so the two directions of a pair often cost different amounts. In is data each current region sends to the candidate; out is data the candidate sends back.

Current regionIn $/GBOut $/GBIn /moOut /moTotal /mo
EU (Frankfurt) · eu-central-1 connected to
US East (N. Virginia) us-east-1$0.02$0.02$20$20$41
EU (Ireland) eu-west-1$0.02$0.02$20$20$41
Total$82

Transfer rates are flat per GB with no volume tiers. AWS publishes no rate for a few pairs (for example Jakarta to Osaka); those show as not published and are left out of the total.

How this is calculated

A fixed basket of four line items, priced identically everywhere

Every region is priced on the same four SKUs, each sold in every standard region, so nothing drops out of the comparison and no region gets priced on a substitute:

  • Compute: m6g.xlarge, Linux on-demand. The Graviton2 general-purpose family is the only current-generation one sold in all 36 standard regions; the regional markup barely depends on architecture.
  • Database: db.m6g.large, RDS PostgreSQL, Single-AZ, on-demand. Sold in every standard region.
  • Object storage: S3 Standard, priced through the region's full tier ladder (50 TB and 500 TB breakpoints), per GB-month.
  • Internet egress: data transfer out to the internet, through the region's full tier ladder (10 TB, 50 TB, 150 TB breakpoints), per GB.

Excluded on purpose: the account-level free tier (it applies once per account, not per region), Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (discount percentages can differ by region, and these are on-demand rates), and service availability differences. Cross-region transfer is priced separately from the basket because it's a cost of connecting the candidate, with no counterpart in your current regions; it uses AWS's plain inter-region rates, not Global Accelerator's accelerated ones. Four lines are a proxy for a bill, not a bill. Use the line split to see which service drives a difference, then check that service's own page.
